Chem Chem Lodge sundowners on Lake Manyara

  • TanZania - classic outinafrica
an extraordinary mix of the thundering Great Migration,
noble Maasai warriors, snow-capped mountain peaks,
soda lake flamingoes and, believe it or not, tree-climbing lions!
  • And making your way towards the Serengeti, two tempting add-ons are available:
the 600m deep Ngorongoro Crater sheltering one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth and the bird rich Lake Manyara, stretching a scenic 50kms along the Great Rift escarpment.
And of course, neighbouring Manyara, the beautiful Tarangire National Park
  • The Migration offers dramatic river crossings, but Africa's largest herds keep moving all year long -
eg: February is calving season in the south which attracts many predators...
while the big game found on the Ngorongoro Crater floor are, in fact, 600m down and hardly going anywhere
  • Beat jun-oct peak season rates (and traffic...) by visiting
in the more affordable low season - the game is still there!
  • We suggest a minimum of 5 nights - 2 nights Ngorongoro and 3 nights Serengeti
but if you have 7 nights - add 2 nights at Lake Manyara
For those with 8-9 nights - ask about our outinafrica guided driving tours for up to 6 guests.
  • In general (subject to global warming) dry season occurs in Jan, Feb and Jun-Oct
with the rainy wet season Mar-May, Nov and Dec
  • International flights arrive into either Dar Es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Nairobi Kenya
while Arusha is the gateway for charter flights into Tanzania

First up, the thundering herds of the Serengeti

The Serengeti

1 of 3 Tanzania regions
Out in Africa The Serengeti

ahhhh, the Serengeti... distant horizon lines, big skies and endless plains accentuated by flat-topped acacia trees. Home to the largest herds on the planet and Africa’s highest concentration of predators, the Serengeti is probably THE most celebrated game reserve in the world. It's difficult to predict the exact timing and route of the Great Migration path as herd movement depend so much on weather patterns. Not to mention the unpredictable wildebeest! But with the wildebeest’s constant search for food and water, the 'general' migration route rotates through the eastern Serengeti (nov-dec) and into the wet south where almost 400 000 wildebeest calves are born around late January to mid-March. From April onwards the migration moves up through the western Serengeti, passing the Grumeti around May/June and onward to the drier plains of the north between July and August when jostling herds famously splash their way across the Mara River into Kenya's Masaai Mara... pouncing and kicking as they fight for survival. And the worst part - on their return to Tanzania (sep/oct), it's river crossing time all over again! Important to mention though, seasoned travellers claim that even if you removed the Great Migration from the picture, you still will NOT be disappointed...

Consider a 2night stop-over at the Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

2 of 3 Tanzania regions
Out in Africa Ngorongoro Crater

Sometimes called the eight wonder of the world, the Ngorongoro Crater is indisputably home to the highest density of big game in Africa including lions, leopards, hyena’s, baboons, large flocks of crowned cranes, black/white rhinos and some of Africa’s largest tusker elephants! The crater, a perfect caldera, forms a natural bowl with a diameter of approximately 18 kilometres and features an astonishing variety of landscapes – from misty forests and rocky mountain peaks to wide open plains, valleys, rivers and an alkaline lake filled with flamingoes. And sharing the abundant grazing grounds and groundwater on the crater floor with approximately 25000 wild animals, are members of the noble Maasai tribe who can be seen grazing their sheep and cattle all over. The only place on earth where mankind and wild animals co-exist in harmony. Listed below, our 2 favourite places: from simply divine and luxurious... to affordable excellence

Lake Manyara and Tarangire

3 of 3 Tanzania regions
Out in Africa Lake Manyara and Tarangire
Lying side by side, Lake Manyara National Park is probably better known for its tree climbing lions, the soda ash lake, its flamingos and breath taking scenery. Dense woodlands, evergreen forests, grassy flood plains, steep mountainsides and the rest of the Park, probably two thirds of it, covered by Lake Manyara – a bird watchers haven! The best game viewing here is from August to September & December to February.

Tarangire National Park, famous for its high density of elephants and baobab trees, is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania and is named after the Tarangire River running through it – an animal magnet during the dry season June to October. From woodland to dry swamp, Tarangire is a game rich, slightly off-the-beaten-path reserve not to be missed.

Rainy season: apr-may - Dry season (peak game viewing): jun-oct
Green season: dec-mar for the legendary flamingo migration on Lake Manyara.
