Fly 4hr from Johannesburg, meet and greet for a 2.5hr road transfer to the lodge of your choice and you are set to go trekking to find the magnificent Mountain Gorilla. The Park National des Volcans in Rwanda offer no less than 10 habituated Mountain Gorilla families living on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. And with these lush, dense and misty forests of Rwanda not too far away from the big game of Kenya - consider a dream itinerary combining Gorilla Trekking AND the Masai Mara. Memorable stuff.

Gorilla Trekking Permits, Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda

what people are saying...
$1500 pp permit gives one only 1 hour with the gorilla’s so the great debate is: to buy 1 or 2 permits?
Those who did only 1 day say ‘that shortest ever’ hour will forever remain as their MOST memorable.
Those who did 2 days say the experiences were COMPLETELY different… & strongly advise 2 days...

in the meantime...
there are 10 habituated gorilla families & only 8 trekkers per family visit - giving ONLY 80 daily permits
plan your trekking dates well in advance and let us know so we can book the all-important permits
we will also check lodge availability so accommodation & permits can be confirmed simultaneously
clients to be in GOOD physical condition for the 2-5 hr trek which can include some rough terrain
hiking through dense vegetation can prove to be quite strenuous and physically demanding
a maximum of only 8 visitors are allowed per daily gorilla family observation (10 families)
once found by guides, the gorillas are observed for a 1 hour period only
clients with a cold or any illness, will NOT be allowed to go trekking
please adhere strictly to trekking guides' safety instructions

important gorilla trekking info

important stuff to know that will ensure a comfortable and most memorable gorilla trek...line BOT
site button originalTEMPERATURES
At 11000 feet above sea level, it can get chilly but during the day, when the sun breaks through, you do feel it. The gorillas could be found in open clearings with NO shade so pack brimmed hats, sun protection and sunglasses.
site button originalWHAT TO PACK
A daily laundry service also allows one to pack less and bring smaller bags.
Pack binoculars, cameras and chargers that will work with 220 volts.
Also bring a 3-pin square (UK) electrical adapter plug.
site button originalCLOTHING
Pack light, comfortable, muted colour shirts with long sleeves, T-shirts, cargo's and jeans.
Wear a shirt with a vest/t-shirt plus a warm fleece or pull-over for chilly early mornings.
Comfortable sturdy hiking boots (or trainers with grip) that you have worn BEFORE the trek.
Long socks (to tuck trousers into) as a precaution in case you come across safari ants.
Fortunately you might only see them maybe 1 out of every 10 treks...
gators
site button originalNETTLE-PROOFING
Nettles penetrate any type of fabric EXCEPT the waterproof material Gortex, or similar.
Waterproof pants are brilliant, obviously for the rain, but more so for the nettles...
The longer 'knee-length gator' is suggested as the short version serves no purpose.
Arm yourself with a pair of garden gloves with protective rubber/leather layers.
Finally, a light weight waterproof jacket - both for nettles - and staying dry.
site button originalGOING ON SAFARI before or after the GORILLA TREK?
add on a 2-4night safari in Kenya's Masai Mara or Tanzania's Serengeti - a 1.5hr flight from Kigali.
Note that charter flight passengers are subject to a luggage restriction of 15kgs (34lbs) pp.
For these add-on safari clients, Sabyinyo Lodge provide backpacks, gators and gloves.
site button originalMEDICAL
Note that travel to Rwanda requires a yellow fever vaccination and malaria prophylactics.
Bring supplies of prescription/personal medications and your favourite insect repellent.
site button originalTRAVEL INSURANCE
all traveling guests MUST be covered by comprehensive travel insurance prior to entering Rwanda.
fully comprehensive travel insurance should include emergency medical evacuation insurance
Sabyinyo Lodge offer Flying Doctor emergency medical evacuation insurance - rates on request.
site button originalFUEL SURCHARGE
Should fuel prices increase significantly, a levy will apply and be communicated to clients in advance.
General Conditions of Bisate Lodge and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge apply.

Your once-in-a-lifetime experience awaits in beautiful Rwanda...
