where to stay in Sossusvlei

Situated in the heart of the Namib Naukluft National Park, the clean-lined and gently curving slopes of the terracotta-hued sand dunes at Sossusvlei rise up to a remarkable 300m and are the most photographed dunes in the world! The magical clarity of light during sunrise and sunset reveals a fascinating and surrealistic landscape changing colour from deep pink to bright orange and makes for one of the most astonishing sights in the world. Sossusvlei is a clay pan, surrounded by enormous sand dunes, and close to Deadvlei - the most arid and lifeless place on earth with pitch black sun scorched Camel Thorn trees set against a contrasting backdrop of bleached-white pans, rusty-red dunes and a deep blue sky - a photographer's dream! Don't expect to see the big 5 here but keep an eye open for ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, hyena's, cheetah, bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox, aardwolf and a fascinating array of small desert floor creatures leaving the tiniest tracks in the sand - all well adapted to live in this dry, desert climate where day time temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius (and more) and night time temperatures can drop to below zero.line PAGE namibia

where to stay in Etosha National Park

Completely off the beaten track with far less visitor's than most other African reserves, the strikingly beautiful, stark and arid Etosha National Park in northern Namibia is probably the most rewarding big game destination in africa. Open grassy woodland and thick scrub spread out around the flat, silvery-white, salt encrusted 5000 square km Etosha Pan upon which dust devils twirl playfully while heat mirages blur an endless horizon. Home to the big 5 - along with 114 species of plains game - game spotting is made incredibly easy by simply waiting patiently at one of the many watering holes dotted across the park. Best season is winter (May-September) with cooler days and less shrub for easy viewing while summer sees the return of thousands of waterbirds, including hundreds of thousands of flamingos making their mass breeding grounds in the area. A true untamed wilderness well worth a visit!line PAGE namibia

where to stay Skeleton Coast or Kunene

Stark desert serenity and deafening silence await in the extreme north west - Namibia's most remote and unpopulated region. A study of life in extremes, the desolate Skeleton Coast gives way to endless ancient valleys, rugged terrain and lunar-like dune fields while, even further north, the perennial Kunene River, home to Nile crocodiles, creates a surreal and lush green oasis in this harsh and arid landscape. The local Himba people, along with plains game like gemsbok, mountain zebra, springbok and ostrich, thrive on the famous damp (and eerie) coastal fog coming in off the ocean every morning while the vast grasslands of nearby Hartmann's Valley is the best place to view many fascinating examples of the intriguing 'fairy circle' phenomenon.
