no, a 9-10hour drive is no fun so we suggest flying between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth

a WORLD in one country

South African electricity supply is 220/230 volts. Plugs have either 3 round pins or 2 smaller pins and international adaptors can be purchased locally.

Most hotel rooms have 110 volt outlets for electric shavers and appliances.

Smoking is prohibited in most public spaces in South Africa, including airports. Places like restaurants, bars and clubs normally offer designated smoking areas.

Good service gets 10-15% tip, excellent service gets more.

Safari lodges normally provide gratuity envelopes on check out day so no need to deal with any money while on safari.

Petrol pump attendants (with dazzling smiles) who fill tanks, wash the windscreen, check oil & tyres will appreciate loose coins (R2 to R10).

The same apply to parking attendants who eagerly direct you into a public parking bay... then offer to guard watch the vehicle in your absence. Tip R2 - R10 on your return to the car.

South Africa is generally a laid back, outdoorsy kinda place so pack comfortable, light weight clothing along with sandals, shorts, swim wear, sunglasses, hats and sun protection creams.

For dining out in upmarket city restaurants, go smart casual.
