addo elephant park big game

malaria-free safari close to cape town

a big game safari in a malaria-free area within easy access from cape town

from 11 elephants in 1931 to the present day sanctuary for 450+ elephants

soon to include a marine reserve with Cape gannets & African penguins

incorporating the largest coastal dune field in the southern hemisphere

the park proudly conserves no less than 5 of south africa's 7 biomes

spot the big 5 here PLUS southern right whales & great white sharks

home to one of the densest african elephant populations on earth

and, ultimately, a paradise for the unique flightless dung beetle

semi-arid with an average rainfall of less than 445 mm per year

rain peaks feb/mar and oct/nov while frost can occur in winter

summer (sep to mar) requires cool light clothing and sunhats

also bathing costumes, sun protection and insect repellent

winter (apr to aug) requires warm clothing for chilly nights

its conservation aim, as described on the addo website:

now safe from the relentless persecution in the past

a place where the grey leviathans of the bush

can, once again, roam in peace
